Summer Seminar Postponed and General Summer Practice Information

Posted by Aaron on June 5th, 2009 at 02:59:29 PM

The Summer Seminar has been postponed until the fall semester due to complications in logistics and room reservations.

We will still be practicing on Tuesdays and Fridays (schedule updated on the upper left) and look forward to seeing you there!

As usual, classes will be open to members old and new with no experience necessary. If you are an incoming student at UT Austin and in town for orientation then congratulations, hook 'em, and feel free to join us for one of our practices.

Summer Seminar... in the works

Posted by Justin on May 30th, 2009 at 01:11:11 AM

School is out and summer has started, well at least for those of us who aren't taking summer school, and what this means is that it's time to kick back in front of the television and forget all about wushu.

Haha. Yeah right!

For those of you who will be around, Michael Thomas is interested in doing a seminar in Austin.

DETAILS
Date: Saturday, June 13th.
Time: 12 - 5pm
Cost: $15
Place: BEL 302
Sifu Michael Thomas will be teaching us the rest of the 5th duan spear set and a 2 man set that he will figure depending on who goes.

Banquet, Wushu Excursion

Posted by Quan on May 3rd, 2009 at 01:24:30 AM

Texas Wushu's Spring 2009 Banquest will be held on Monday, 11 May 2009, at Cannoli Joe's all-you-can-eat Italian buffet. Meet at Littlefield Fountain at 5:45 for rides. The cost will be $5 for members and $10 for non-members. If you want to attend, contact one of the officers so you don't get left out of the om-nom-nom-fest!

Also, Thomas Nguyen is planning a "Wushu Excursion," in which you could go to Sifu Michael Thomas's (Sifu who taught at the last seminar) school and train. Current schedule is from Monday, 25 May (Memorial Day) to Wednesday, 27 May. Practice will generally consist of:

[9-12am] Practice (non formal)
[1-4pm] Practice (non formal)
[6:30-7:30pm] Tai Chi/Taijiquan (Yang style, formal)
[7:30-9:30pm] (regular class)

The non formal sections run like a seminar, whereas the regular class will be a standard class with the conditioning, stretching. You would also be sharing the class with the regular students.

Cost of this will be $40 for all 3 days, but if you're staying short it will be $15/day. If you're staying longer, something can be worked out. Housing will be free for those who stay. All in all, this is a good opportunity to get some more experience with wushu and traditional Chinese martial arts.

Relevant info
Date:Saturday, April 18th
Time: 12pm-4pm Location: BEL 302
Cost: $15
Specifics: The seminar will be led by Sifu Michael Thomas assisted by Thomas Nguyen. They plan to teach a 2-man weapon set and an individual weapon set.

MOAR Updates

Posted by Quan on February 13th, 2009 at 08:38:47 PM

So, we had a seminar last weekend which went GREAT. A fighting set and an empty hand form was added to our knowledge banks. If you had to miss out on it, don't worry, because there will be another one next month.

Also, we will be having a demo on the 20th of February for CSA's Lantern Festival at Gregory Plaza. The whole event lasts from 6:30-9:00. Come for some wonderful cultural awareness and to support your fellow Wushuers! We'll also be having another demo on the 7th of March for Explore UT in the RecSports Center.

Finally, we will be having a movie night on the 21st at Jackie's apartment at around 6-6:30ish. An event will be posted on Facebook. Contact one of us for the address (since I'm pretty sure Jackie wouldn't like me to be posting her address on the Internets).

Seminars

Posted by Quan on January 29th, 2009 at 11:20:38 PM

On February 7th, we will be hosting a seminar held by Texas Wushu alum Antoine Pham from 12:00PM to 5:00PM. Come to either or both and level up your wushu skillz. I hear weaponry might be involved.

Seminar will be in Belmont 904, where we usually hold Friday practice. There is currently a $10 fee per person, but this might be waived depending on how some other things turn out. If you're interested, contact Vicky by Friday the 30th.

New Year, New Stuff

Posted by Quan on January 8th, 2009 at 07:29:35 PM

Alright, so, here's our new officers:

President: Vicky Yap
Vice President: Richard Walls
Secretary: Kiko Ramos
Treasurer: Justin Chelette
Demo/Events Coordinator: Krystal McDaniel
Webmaster: Quan Zhang
Historian: Jackie Ayoub

In other news, we will be demoing for Chinese New Year. Thing is, CNY is on the 26th, and we get back on the 20th. Even assuming that the demo is going to be later, that's not a whole lot of time to practice before. So, when you're at home, please for the love of Xenu start training and stretching. We'll be having practice on the 20th, and we want to start with the ball rolling.

Also, we'll be having demo team tryouts on the 20th as well. It will cover all kicks (straight, cross, inside and outside crescent), five stance and Shaolin 1("Yee Ha Ha Ha" form; you will most likely be doing the form in sync with others), any jumps you can do, and stance drills. Make sure you pay attention to details such as feet parallel, looking in the right direction, and doing the movements with snap.

Officer Re-elections and Banquet

Posted by Quan on November 29th, 2008 at 08:57:53 PM

AKA "Quan discovered bold tags."

So, per tradition, Texas Wushu will be having officer elections for the next semester. The available positions are:

President: Nicole's job. Runs the club, attends Recsports meetings, whips you into shape, etc. Must be a previous officer and have had at least 1 semester of club membership.
Vice President: Krystal's job. Plans socials and other events, takes over if the President is incapacitated. Must have at least 1 semester of club membership.
Secretary: Vicky's job. Handles administrative duties, takes minutes of officer meetings, etc. Must be organized, punctual, and crazy prepared.
Treasurer: Ning's job. Handles financial duties such as taking dues and ordering equipment equipment.
Historian: Jackie's job. Documents events for posterity. Needs to be available to go to most if not all demos/socials.
Webmaster: Quan's job. Updates and maintains website. No previous coding experience required.
Demo Coordinator: Currently, Krystal's taking this one as well. Finds opportunities for demos - cultural events, grand openings, birthday parties, etc.

Feel free to ask any of them about what their job entails if you're interested. If you did not get an application, email Vicky (check the contacts page) for one. Applications are due by 8:00PM on Friday, 5 Dec 2008.

Also, we will be having our Fall 2008 banquet on Sunday, 7 December (a day that will live in infamy, might I add). We'll be eating at the Sea Dragon, and it will last from 7:00PM to 9:00PM. After that, we're planning on heading over to karaoke until about midnight, but if you have somewhere to be we can drop you off. Meet at the Littlefield Fountain at 6:20 to 6:30 for rides.

No Practice This Week

Posted by Quan on November 17th, 2008 at 04:09:10 AM

Due to Madrigal Dinner from Tuesday through Saturday, there will be no practice on those days.

Madrigal Dinner

Posted by Quan on November 5th, 2008 at 11:47:39 PM

We have another demo coming up, this time as part of UT's annual Madrigal Dinner. We're going to performing during intermission. This will be going on every day from Wednesday, Nov 19, to Saturday, Nov 22, from 6:30 to 9:30, so don't worry about schedule conflicts. If you are busy on all four of those days...that's tough, mate.

In order to see the performance, you have to buy a ticket. $17 for the awesome seats, $13 for the cheap seats, sold at the Frank Erwin Center on 1701 Red River. It's worth it though - for that, you get a 5-course meal with a Renaissance theme, a show from the theatre department, and a choir concert, as well as an AMAZING demo from the demo team! Not to mention the fact that as students, you're paying about half price! Huzzah!

Webmaster's note: don't let the Renaissance theme put you off. The Renaissance is great. It was a period when men were men and women were women (anything else got burned at the stake), when arguments could be resolved at rapier point, and when Shakespeare owned people at with such witty insults as:
Demetrius: "Villain, what hast thou done?"
Aaron: "That which thou canst not undo."
Chiron: "Thou hast undone our mother."
Aaron: "Villain, I have done thy mother."

Seriously. Go to it. Awesomeness shall ensue. More info about the event can be found here.

TASA Night Market Demo and other updates

Posted by Quan on October 17th, 2008 at 08:41:47 AM

We will be having another demo for TASA's Night Market. It will be held on the 23rd of October at the Gregory Plaza. Come watch and eat good Asian food!

The Night Market lasts from 7:00PM to 10:00PM. The actual demo is around 8:48, but they start serving food before then, so you might as well show up at the beginning. Plus, you get to catch performances from other groups, like CCA.

Also, if you haven't paid for things like dues or equipment, PAY THEM. NOW. OR WE WILL SUMMON AN ATTACK PANDA TO BITE YOUR HEAD OFF.

Is It Can Be Demo Time Plz?

Posted by Quan on September 16th, 2008 at 09:12:44 PM

We have 3 demos coming up! Yay!

CSA Demo - 3rd October at the Texas Union Ballroom. Performance starts at 7PM.

CSSA Demo - 4th October at the Texas Union Theatre. Also starts at 7PM.

Madrigal Dinner - this one is tentative. Most likely we'll be doing it. This will be in November.

Additional information will be in the "Upcoming Events" sidebar (to the left) and on Facebook.

If you are interested in performing, talk to the officers during practice. Also, email Krystal about what styles/tricks/forms/other cool things you know, as well as any ideas you may have for the demo.

BTW, if you couldn't tell, Quan is a fan of lolcats.

MOAR UPDATES

Posted by Quan on September 1st, 2008 at 09:26:05 PM

Party on the Plaza - we still need people! Talk to Nicole, in our handy dandy contacts page , which has been updated to reflect the new officers!

Football - here's how the free stuff works: volunteering at your first game gets your dues waived. Your second game gets you free shirt, third gets you free pants, and fourth gets you free shoes. If you already have any of these items, then you get the next one down the line. Example: I already have a shirt. My first game would get me dues, my second would then get me pants. Also, the contact for this one is Krystal.

Mailing list: if you are not on the mailing list, contact Vicky.

First Practice, Party on the Plaza, and Football

Posted by Quan on August 30th, 2008 at 04:46:10 AM

First off, YAY for everyone who came to practice today.

Second, Party on the Plaza is on the 3rd of September (next Wednesday). Texas Wushu has a table and needs people to help work it. The whole thing is from 10AM to 7PM, but you'll be working in shifts (i.e. I'm working the 12PM-1PM shift), so it's not like you'll be skipping class to work Party on the Plaza. It'll be fun - you get to recruit people and show off our lovely table full of shiny pointy weapons.

Third, we are volunteering to work as ushers for UT home football games. This actually comes with a bunch of perks - not only do you get to see the football game for free, but you can also get free stuff from Texas Wushu along the lines of free shirt or free pants or free shoes or waived dues.

Talk to Nicole if you're interested.

Summer Practice

Posted by Quan on June 14th, 2008 at 09:32:26 PM

Hope everyone's having a nice summer. For those of you lucky enough to be stuck in Austin, we do have rooms reserved for summer practice at the following times:

Tuesday: 6-8PM in RSC 1.104
Wednesday: 4-6PM in RSC 1.138
Friday: 6-8PM in BEL 302

Essentially, the previous Sunday practices are now relocated to Wednesdays. Summer class structure will depend on the number of attending members. However, practice will most likely follow a self-study paradigm. We will try to make adjustments as necessary.

Also, will those who plan to attend the summer classes send Ben an email at benxiang@mail.utexas.edu? He will create a separate mailing list so we can decouple communication from the main listserv (allows us to plan our wushu summer '08 proletariat revolt uninhibited...) Shoot him an email if you have any questions.

Wushu News 4

Posted by Quan on April 14th, 2008 at 02:51:12 AM

Hey all,

The semester is winding down and it's time to start thinking ahead toward the summer/fall semesters. That means we need new officers to help keep this club alive and running smoothly.

Officer applications are to be emailed to John by next Tuesday (4/22); please include your name, position you're running for, and any relevant qualifications. The current officers will vote on who is the most qualified for each position, and the elected will get to attend a new sport club reps orientation on Sunday (4/27).

While general club decisions (budget allocation, social events, practice structure) are made by a group consensus during occasional officer meetings throughout the semester, there are several specific duties relating to each position:

President - John's job. Main representative to UT RecSports, oversees general club activities, handles administrative duties (paperwork), declares war on other clubs, etc. Only current officers are eligible for this position.

VP - Ben's job. In charge of inventory and keeps the prez in check.

Secretary - Vicky's job. Keeps track of members' information; takes notes at officer meetings

Treasurer - Derek's job. Takes dues and equipment fees and makes regular deposits to the bank; in charge of fundraising

Historian - Krystal's job. Takes pictures and videos of practices and demos; compiles a slide show at the end of every semester

Demo coordinator - Nicole's job. Keeps track of demo invitations; liaison to hosts of demos

Webmaster - Quan's job. Updates website.

Email John if you want more details about a specific position, or ask any of the current officers. We look forward to hearing from you all.

News 2 and 3

Posted by Quan on March 17th, 2008 at 10:17:50 PM

First off, thanks to everyone who came to the Lantern Festival and the Explore UT demos.

Also, there's another social opportunity coming up for those who are interested in intramural indoor soccer. Registration ends on 3/25 so let me know who is interested, either through email or in practice, by then. We need at least 2 guys, 2 girls, and a goalie of either gender to play. More details here .

Start thinking about becoming an officer for the fall semester next year. Our club is mainly student-run, and with some of our current officers leaving, we need all the help we can get.

Positions include:
President

Vice President

Secretary

Treasurer

Demo coordinator

Historian

Webmaster

Let John know if you're interested in any of these. The current officers will be happy to answer any questions you may have. More details on this later....

News 1

Posted by Quan on January 30th, 2008 at 11:23:45 PM

So it's 5 days late...sorry guys. Anyways:

1. Upcoming Demos:
There are currently two demos, one on 2/7 (next Thursday) and one on 2/22 (Friday).

There is currently extra demo team practice going on after regular practice. I think the team for the New Year's demo is set, but talk to an officer about that if you really want to do it. Alternately, you could try for the 22nd Feb demo.

Anyone is welcome to join and be a part of a really cool performance REGARDLESS OF SKILL LEVEL (previous experience preferred, however). The most important part of being on the demo team is dedication. This means being able to come to the next 2 extra Friday practices and show up to as many regular classes as you can.

2. Upcoming Social:
2 Feb (Saturday): Wushu Game Night.
8:00 pm at Jackie's place (same as movie night last semester: 2810 Salado St. #319, ATX, 78705).

There will be poker and mahjong set up with prizes for the winners of each. Come have some fun with your wushu comrades dressed in non-workout clothes!

3. Testing:
Originally we planned for the first level test of the semester to be next Tuesday (2/29), but if no one is ready by then, it'll probably be postponed. So if you're dying to test to the next level, please let John or any of the officers know. Testing requirements are on the website: www.texaswushu.org.

4) Dues:
Turn in your $25 dues to our secretary, Vicky, by next week. Don't worry about the green membership forms if you filled one out last semester (I told some of you differently in class. My bad...). Pants and shoes are still also available, so if you need new or replacement equipment, holla.
